Physical Education
At Woodlands School Hutton Manor the Physical Education Department is very proud of the dynamic sporting experience offered to all our children and of the success achieved across so many sports. Sport is part of the rich tapestry of our children’s character development that propels them towards athletic and academic success.
Three specialist physical education teachers ensure a varied, exciting and balanced curriculum for all children starting in Kindergarten through to Year 6. Traditional sports such as tag rugby, tennis, basketball, swimming, football, netball, gymnastics, dance, athletics, cricket, rounders and cross country are complimented by exciting and innovative activities such as triathlon, tchoukball and VX Ball.
Pupils are encouraged to work hard within their lessons to achieve their own ‘personal bests’ and expand their knowledge and skills in the vast extracurricular programme we offer. Extracurricular provision is wide and varied and all children have the opportunity to participate at their own level in both competitive and recreational activities. School teams regularly appear in finals in a variety of sports at district, county, regional and national level.
The school enjoys extensive sporting facilities including a sports hall, swimming pool, as well as playing fields for triathlon, x-country training and 3 football pitches, a hard-court area and an all-weather astro-turf football pitch.
Extra-Curricular Sporting Activities
As a department we believe our extracurricular provision is second to none. We pride ourselves on the amount of time given to the pupils and on the breadth and standard of pupils' achievement at all levels. All staff within the department are committed to this process because we believe its value cannot be overstated. Whether pupils participate for competition, for fun, for fitness, or use the activities as a pastime, we believe our present programme offers pupils, the opportunity to contribute to the ethos of the school and gives them genuine links to clubs and the community for a sustainable healthy lifestyle.
Competitive sporting activities at Woodlands Hutton Manor include football, netball, tag rugby, cricket, athletics, cross-country, basketball, gymnastics, triathlon, swimming, rounders, golf, skiing and tennis. The ‘House’ system allows every child to engage in competitive sport.

Sports Award
The Sports Award has been introduced as a reward (and incentive) for pupils who demonstrate commitment to their sporting activities in the junior years and will be presented in Years 5 and 6. In both instances the Sports Award will be presented at the end of the Spring Term.
We define commitment as meaning: full attendance; focus and enthusiasm during sessions. In addition to a full commitment to a club we expect to see the following qualities demonstrated:
- Positive behaviour, thereby acting as a good sporting role model for others
- Ability to work independently without teacher guidance
- To act as a peer coach to others where appropriate
In order to be eligible, children must demonstrate commitment to 4 different sports clubs across the year. Sports Award students are also identified through assessment and/or teacher recommendation. We expect Sports Award students to demonstrate a commitment to learning, with a positive attitude towards being appropriately challenged (both in class and at extracurricular clubs).
In order for us to stretch and challenge the Sports Award students we offer opportunities that will allow this to happen. Our key expectation is that these students act as role models for the PE department and to continue to create the successes that we have enjoyed. Therefore these are the students that we expect to commit to our extracurricular clubs and to be involved in as many different sports and teams that they can.
Sport provides the school with the opportunity to excel on a national stage as well as creating friendships and team spirit which transcends throughout the school.
